NIKE MOVING MOUNTAINS

Moving Mountains follows the stories of everyday athletes on extraordinary journeys to overcomes obstacles in their pursuit of sport.

EPISODE ONE

ft. Yuaki Shimuziu

A monk finds enlightenment through the open trail while running ultra-marathons in Nagano, Japan.

The people who see Yukai Shimizu in the streets of Nagano know him as two things: the friendly runner who greets them every morning, and the monk at their local Zenkoji Temple. Yukai’s reasons for running are important.

His role as a monk often involves advising community members who are experiencing hardship, a responsibility that weighs heavily upon his shoulders. While he sometimes questions whether he is worthy of this position, running gives him the space to center and enrich his sense of self. “Some carry problems that are difficult to resolve,” Yukai says. “If my heart is fulfilled, I can provide them the opportunity to accept their own grief or face their own difficulties.”

Now 46, Yukai continues to run every day so he can enjoy and appreciate the things he likes to do most. Spending time around the table with family. Drinking a beer while watching a game. Being fully present. “For me as a monk, to run is to live in the moment. That itself is a teaching of Buddhism, and it has a positive effect on me.”

EPISODE TWO

ft. Carlos Brown
A golf instructor has to re-find purpose after falling out of love with the game after losing half his leg to gangrene.

Golf, in so many ways, represents the fickle nature of life. Carlos Brown, an award-winning golf coach from Dallas, Texas, knows all there is to know about the game’s unpredictability. While teaching a lesson in 2016, Carlos stepped off a golf cart and into a deep sprinkler head, badly spraining his ankle. It shouldn’t have been a big deal, but an infection set in and he was rushed to the emergency room. When he awoke from surgery, his lower left leg had been amputated.

As a Black coach in a predominantly white sport, Carlos had always been in the minority. As a Black amputee golf pro, he was now even more so. “I represent a group of people bigger than myself — two groups of people bigger than myself,” Carlos says. “I can’t cut corners. I can’t cheat people.” But through it all, he was determined to find the silver lining.

After the amputation, Carlos never once entertained the thought that he wouldn’t return to teach golf. “I knew I was going to play again. I knew I was going to teach,” he says. “But what I didn’t know was that the journey was going to be a transformation.”
